December 2006 Church Newsletter
November 27, 2006
PASTOR CRAIG'S NOTES I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving!! We all have much to give thanks for this year. God has given to us such great gifts, but the greatest is the gift of each other. This has especially come home again this year. As you all are aware, there are many in our church family that have had a member of their family diagnosed with cancer. We are in constant prayer for each of these. One thing that we are reminded of is how precious each one is. Even when we get upset with one another, as we sometimes do during holiday gatherings, we do not love them any less. After doing 8 social ethics papers this semester, I have come to an understanding that the way we see each other is a major problem in our society. When we start to see one another as just a number, a commodity or something we can use and throw away when we are done, I feel that we have lost a great deal. We must always see one another in the same manor that God sees us. Special enough to give the entire amount that God had. Then we will begin to be as thankful as we should be. What are you thankful for this year? Be Thankful for each other. Praying for you as I hope that you are praying for me. Craig ANNUAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETING SUNDAY DECEMBER 3, 2006 FOLLOWING CHURCH KITCHEN SUPPLIES NEEDED The Membership committee appreciates your help in keeping the supplies stocked in the kitchen. A current list is plastic utensils, plastic cups, paper plates, paper towels, coffee, etc. You can always check on the refrigerator for an ongoing list. We thank you for helping to keep the kitchen supplied. KIDS IN CHRIST AUTUMN PARTY Kids in Christ would like to thank the church for sponsoring our recent Autumn Party. Nine kids and four adults went to the Pumpkin Patch and Hay Maze North of Marietta. We were treated to hot dogs, smores and hay rides. Some of our kids painted pumpkins while others tried their hand at Pumpkin Chunkin in which we are pleased to announce that Pastor Craig turned out to be our Pumpkin Chunkin Master by hitting the Target with his very first pumpkin. We all cheered him on. Looking forward to our next event. MEMBERSHIP REPORT The Membership Committee is asking for any new updates on addresses, phone numbers, e-mail addresses or lack thereof, etc. The committee will be updating the directories in January. New officers, committee chairs and changes in membership will be included. Please help by contacting Alice Cochran (276-5486), Phil McGinnis (276-5158) or Craig Rutherford, Pastor, (276-3093). We have been blessed with several new member families this past year: Kendra Glazner, Tay Satterly, Pat Burkett, Dean & Arleta Bobbitt, and Gary & Lisa Allgood. If you haven*t met them please introduce yourself and make them welcome. The Membership Committee is responsible for anything that concerns the membership of our church: Membership attendance, Birthdays and anniversaries, Newsletter, Web site, Church directory, Bibles for members, Kitchen sign-ups and Fellowship dinner/cake and cookies schedules, Flowers/plants for members and immediate families and many other duties around the church. If any of these activities interest you, please let our committee know and we can use your help. ~Alice Cochran, Chair MEMBER SPOTLIGHT DEAN & ARLETA BOBBITT Dean and Arleta Bobbitt are new members of our congregation. They have become very active in our church family. Arleta grew up in Rich Hill in midwest Missouri and Dean grew up in Fairland, OK. They graduated from their respective high schools and met in Bible College in Joplin, MO. They married in 1961. Dean attended the Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa. He then worked for an airline as an aircraft mechanic for 20 years in Houston and Dallas. When the company planned to move them from the Dallas area back to Houston they decided to start their own business in Ponder, TX. They later moved the business to Pilot Point, TX. Their business was manufacturing fiberglass running boards for pickups and vans for after market sales. In 10 years they produced over 110,000 sets with the help of 30 employees. After the economic downturn following 9/11 they retired early and moved across the river to Love County. They live on west Highway 32 across from Turner School. Dean and Arleta reared two children, Kevin and Kimberly, and are the proud grandparents of three. Please welcome them to our church family. COUPON UPDATE The holidays are here! We will all be opening cans of soup for cooking or just eating and enjoying. Remember to cut that label off and bring it to church. The coupon box is still on top of the refrigerator. Put the labels inside and we will trim them when we take them to retreat next year. Our church women have sponsored many worthwhile events for others with our label program. Drizzle carmel on top of pecan mixture. Chill Enjoy! Carrie CHURCH FINANCE The church has no money. It all belongs to God and we only try to manage His money His way. On December the 3rd we will be voting on the Church Budget. We need to understand what we are voting on. It appears that we have a lot of money, but we don't. So I want to explain what I understand and what I know about why we have this apparent contradiction First we have the General Fund which is our annual budgeted operating fund. This budget is voted on each year and is approved by the congregation. This is the primary fund that keeps the church operating. It pays the preacher, the utilities, building maintenance, evangelism, membership, worship and administrative expenses. It is supported by tithes, pledges, and undesignated gifts. This is the fund that is nearly bankrupt and is the fund that often has to borrow from other funds to keep the church doors open. Second we have permanent funds. These are gifts or endowments by people who wanted to help the church even after they passed on to be with their heavenly Father. We accepted the gifts or endowments and agreed to the restrictions they wanted. In general the agreements all stipulate that we can only use the earnings from the permanent funds. We cannot change this provision. We cannot spend the principal of the permanent funds. We must respect the wishes of the giver that their gift keeps giving forever. In reality we just manage their funds that are in our bank account to make the most earnings in accordance with our abilities. People today control their gift and the money in their bank account. They have not placed it in our trust. The earnings of the permanent funds by the original agreements or wills are restricted or designated for a period of time. Some earnings are designated for outreach, scholarship, building, and the general budget. In general, the distribution restriction provisions for earnings may be changed after about five years. Third we have the designated funds: Scholarship, Outreach, Building, Quarter More and Memorial and others which may have partial restrictions for use of the principal and the earnings and which are managed by the appropriate committees or as approved by the board. I have watched the evolution of our church financial management for over 30 years. We started with no budget and no investments and begged each Sunday for money to pay the bills. We now have a Budgeted General Fund, permanent fund, investments, and a number of unbudgeted designated funds. I would hope the 2007 church members and administration would take the next step and carefully study and improve financial management policy and procedures by our church. ~Jerry Cochran CALLING ALL COMMITTEE CHAIRS If you would like to be a committee chair or just a member of a certain committee for the 2007 year, please contact Curtis Cochran. 2007 Slate of Officers The following is a list of the officers, deacons and elders for the 2007 year.
