First Christian Church Newsletter, March 2007
March 9, 2007
PASTOR GRAIG’S NOTES As you are reading this newsletter, the church has entered the time of Lent. Lent is a time of preparation within the life of the church. It is the time during which we recall our Lord and Saviors final journey towards Jerusalem and the cross that awaited him. The biblical account tells us that Jesus set his face towards the cross and would not look to the left or the right. Jesus, I believe, had a full understanding of his actions and what would be the consequences of them. Jesus knew what the cost was going to be and that he was the only one who could pay it. For many of us this has become a traditional time of giving up something in our lives. Some give up sweets, or something they like to eat. Others give up thing like watching TV or listening to the radio. The list could be endless of the thing that one might give up. But we have also begun a tradition of taking things on. Starting a new bible study, giving more time to the family or to the church. If I might suggest something to think about, how about spending mort time in the bible. I would suggest that spend this coming 40 days of Lent by reading the entire New Testament. If you read only a couple of chapters a day, maybe 4 or 5, you should be able easily to get through it all. Whatever you decide on doing may you neither look to the left or to the right, but keep your eye ever looking towards the final home. Remember all of those on our prayer list. Praying for you as I hope that you are praying for me. Craig UPCOMING EVENTS MARCH 11 DWF 5:00 P.M. @ THE CHURCH MARCH 14 BOARD MEETING 7:00 P.M. MEMBERSHIP SPOTLIGHT ~ Scott & Doris Malone Scott and Doris are native Californians coming from the greater Los Angeles area. Scott*s father owned Hemet Pipeline and Scott originally worked for his father in construction. During the days of conscription, Scott was given the honors of going into the Army and taking a tour in Vietnam. In 1972, the Malone’s were wed and moved to Ft. Riley, KS. Scott remained in the Army and was assigned to various bases such as Ft. Sill, OK, Ft. Hood, TX, Ft. Carson, CO, Germany, Korea, and Southern California to name a few (yes, there were many more). While Scott was serving his country Doris entered employment with the government as a Civil Servant and moved her job along with his, mostly working for the Army, Navy, and the Social Security Administration. Scott retired in Southern California and Doris went back to college. After the military, he went to work for the El Toro Marine Base until it was closed through Base Closure. Once his employment disappeared the Malone’s relocated to their mountain cabin in the mountain resort of Lake Arrowhead, CA. Luther worked for California Land Management as the campground supervisor for all the campgrounds in the San Bernardino Mountains and then went to work at Pinecrest Christian Conference Center (Assemblies of God) as their Maintenance Supervisor. Doris finished her college degree and went to work for the Veterans Administration. Scott's job ended due to health problems, and the Malone’s sold off their property and relocated to Falconhead in 2004. Scott does not work anymore, but Doris works at Mercy Health Love County in the Medical Records Department. The Malone’s have two grown sons, and three granddaughters. One son is in the Coast Guard, stationed in Alaska, and lives there with his wife and 3 daughters. The other son moved to Falconhead in June 2006. We have a great time and the kids have a blast! Carla LEADERSHIP SCHOOL 2007 At the recent leadership training school in Ok. City, I was privileged to attend two workshops, "You might be a Disciple If" which highlighted the history of the Stone-Campbell movement. Rev. Chris Shorow, Sr. Pastor of the First Christian Church in Edmond spoke about some of our early leaders with particular emphasis on Women in the Church. We have such a rich history and while I did not get any references for a more in depth study, I'm sure Craig can help us in that area. Since I'm a fledgling with this Church, I find the more I know the more sure I am that I've found my proper home. The second workshop was "The Four Faces of Spirituality: Head, Heart, Mystery and Imagination. I'm going to quote the synopsis "Spirituality is not just about what you believe or don't believe; it's about worship, prayer and praxis (action, practice). In this workshop you will discover your personal spirituality type. Learn how incorporating all four spirituality styles can deepen your personal faith walk and build community in your congregation's worship services." The leader was Romney Nesbitt, Senior minister, First Presbyterian Church, Cleveland, Ok; M. Div. From Phillips Theological Seminary. She gave us a test and then discussed our answers. I have some notes and a copy of the blank test, I certainly am a novice, but I found it interesting and would be glad to share with anyone that is interested. Thanks, Yvone DIRECTORY PAGE UPDATES AVAILABLE The 2007 new pages for the directory are still available. The membership committee sold the 2006 picture directories last year for $10.00 and each year will provide updates on members, board officers and committee chairs. If anyone needs a copy of the 2006 directory, they are still available, along with the update pages in the office. Phil McGinnis did a wonderful job on the directories and the membership committee thanks him. DIRECTORY CORRECTIONS Corrections for the picture directories will be listed in the monthly newsletter.
